You’ve been asking me for months to do an episode about the difference between Vegan and Paleo diets and for some help sorting through the hype that surrounds these dietary trends. I didn’t want to scrape together a bunch of studies and facts (though I’ve got plenty of links later in this post if you’re seeking that kind of thing) because ultimately it’s possible to manipulate and selectively quote from studies to support almost anything. Instead, I wanted to speak to you from my heart and from the core values that play into my own lifestyle choices. That’s what you’ll hear in today’s episode.

Resources for Scientifically Evaluating Paleo & Vegan Diets

Plant Positive’s YouTube channel does an incredibly thorough job of looking directly at the research–not just the general body of nutrition knowledge in the world, but specifically the evidence used by popular Paleo Diet gurus to support their assertions. The videos can be a little dry, but if you’re seriously considering eating a Paleo-style diet, you owe it to yourself to watch them attentively.

Dr. Michael Greger’s YouTube Channel keeps you abreast of the latest nutrition research in bite-sized videos that are quick and fun to watch.

Paleofantasy by Marlene Zuk discusses the flaws in thinking that underpin the assertion that humans haven’t adapted to eating grains and agriculturally produced foods.

Thinking of Going Vegan?

Here are some resources to help you plan a healthy and yummy diet that aligns with your values.

The 30 Day Vegan Challenge is an online program by the eloquent Colleen Patrick-Goudreau to help you make the transition easily and smoothly.

Ginny Messina and Jack Norris are Registered Dieticians who’ve got wonderful websites with great evidence-based information about the truth of vegan nutrition, including potential pitfalls to watch out for and realistic assessments of the benefits of plant-based eating. (Hype-free!) They’ve also written books Vegan for Her and Vegan for Life that are wonderful guides for new and seasoned vegans alike.

My friend Gena Hamshaw writes one of the best vegan food blogs on the web, Choosing Raw. Particularly if you’re interested in a scientifically sound, hype-free version of vegan eating, AND if you’ve ever struggled with disordered eating (or a full blown eating disorder, as I have), Gena’s blog is a must-read. Her recipes are easy and delicious and her writing has a gentle strength that will encourage you without pushing or urging.

As always, I’d love to hear your feedback about today’s episode. How are you going to work towards making food choices that reflect your values?
